Hickory Hill Enslaved & African American Cemetery was the primary burying ground for hundreds of enslaved people who worked at Hickory Hill Plantation near Ashland, Virginia. Burials began around 1820 and continued after Emancipation through at least 1938 and likely into the 1950s. Initially thought to hold perhaps 200 burials, recent GPR evidence shows that there could be at least 500 or more graves. Ms. Basic is preparing a preservation plan that will guide best practices at the cemetery for current and future caretakers.
